KOTA KINABALU:
Police fired two shots at a car driven by a man believed high on drugs and alcohol after he tried to ram into them in Sabah’s southwestern Beaufort district yesterday.

They had earlier stopped the car for a check, but the suspect, 57, backed the vehicle and tried to run them down.

The policemen had to fire two shots at the car’s rear tyres to stop him from fleeing, Beaufort police chief Yusoff Zaki Yaacob said.

He said the driver, who had five criminal convictions, was arrested after a brief struggle.

Yusoff said the suspect admitted he had panicked after being stopped by police because he had just taken methamphetamine and a few drinks.

He said police also found a knife and parang in the car.
