This was confirmed by his family in a statement posted on Twitter today.

His family received a call from the Medan prison authorities earlier this morning, informing them that Benjy had trouble breathing because of an asthma attack around 11am before being rushed to a hospital

“He was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.

“Benjy had been ill with chronic asthma and other lung-related illnesses for a few years, and was in and out of hospital multiple times over the years,” his family said in the statement.

Benjy will be buried in Medan tomorrow.

“The family has given consent to the prison authorities to handle the burial there.”

Benjy, who was the son of late actress Azean Irdawaty, was arrested by Indonesian authorities in 2017 and sentenced to 11 years’ in prison on drug charges.
