I’m ‘neutral’ in PM issue, says Umno Supreme Council member

Khaidiriah Abu Zahar says she will only make up her mind when the party’s direction is 'properly expressed'.

PETALING JAYA:
Umno Supreme Council member Khaidiriah Abu Zahar has distanced herself from the party’s stance to withdraw support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

She said she will maintain a “neutral” stance until details of the party’s direction are finalised and a proper explanation provided.

However, Khaidiriah clarified that her position did not mean she was not behind the party’s leadership but simply that she was disappointed with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s “vague explanation”.

“I talked to the president for 30 minutes. He told me everything and I also had to be candid about what the grassroots were saying.

“Unfortunately, at the (virtual) meeting, I could not get a clear explanation and details on the direction of the party. So, I set a condition … only when I get a clear explanation will I say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ (on withdrawing support for Muhyiddin).”

She said any decision finalised by the Umno leadership at this time would impact the party’s direction heading into the next general election.

“I do not want this party to be punished and taught another lesson by the people at the next election for reasons that are not clear,” he said.

Asked about Umno’s unity in its support of the PN administration, Khaidiriah said all party leaders should take this opportunity as a lesson to correct past mistakes and fix what hadn’t worked previously, with an eye towards leading the government once again.

“We need to use this opportunity to strengthen the party. Do the work, whether as the opposition or the government … just do the work.

“What I’m afraid of is that we’ll live in denial within our own bubble,” she said.

Zahid announced last night that the Umno Supreme Council meeting had officially agreed to withdraw support for Muhyiddin as prime minister.

He said Umno also urged Muhyiddin to resign for failing to satisfy the guidelines set by Umno as a condition for them to support the PN-led government.
