Vaccinate foreigners in EMCO areas, says MP

Hannah Yeoh says residents, regardless of citizenship, should be given the vaccine once they are tested negative for Covid-19.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh says foreigners living in areas under an enhanced movement control order should be vaccinated to prevent a ‘wave of infections’.
PETALING JAYA:
Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has urged the government to immediately vaccinate foreigners living in areas under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) to prevent “a wave of infections” which would affect the larger population.

The government yesterday announced that several localities in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor would be placed under an EMCO from July 3 to 16, most of which are areas surrounding public flats.

Yeoh said that under the current vaccination programme, using the MySejahtera app, people would not be able to register for it without a MyKad or passport. Further, the mobile vaccination programme led by federal territories minister Annuar Musa is also only available to Malaysians.

“When the barbed wire fencing comes up, the federal government moves in with their frontliners to contain the spread of Covid-19 in these areas.

“Swab tests are being done on every person in EMCO areas. As such, I urge for vaccination to be immediately given to the population in EMCO areas (regardless of their citizenship) once they are tested negative for Covid-19,” she said in a statement.

Yeoh noted that communities with a larger segment of foreign nationals, such as Kampung Sungai Penchala and Kampung Segambut Dalam, had recently been placed under an EMCO because of the high number of infections.

Stressing that Covid-19 does not distinguish between a local and a foreigner, she hoped the government would immediately send mobile vaccine trucks into EMCO areas today.
