PETALING JAYA:
Putrajaya will send some 30,000 vaccine doses to the federal territory of Labuan soon in view of the Covid-19 crisis there, which vaccine minister Khairy Jamaluddin described as “quite critical”.

In a press conference, Khairy said the Covid-19 immunisation task force (CITF) is first looking at Labuan’s capacity to administer vaccines before sending in the doses.

“The 30,000 jabs is just the start. I think Labuan will need around 60,000,” he said.

Labuan has a population of about 100,000.

So far, the federal territory has reported 6,155 cases, according to today’s Covid-19 numbers.

Khairy also said that more than 4.4 million vaccine doses have been administered nationwide so far, while nearly 14 million people have registered for their jabs.

As of June 11, he said private general practitioners have administered a total of 430,000 doses, accounting for around 10% of total vaccinations so far.

He added that the private general practitioners will contribute to some 66,000 vaccinations a day this week, increasing to 78,000 a day by June 23.

“Our projection is that they will contribute 145,000 a day by July,” he said.

Around 1.3 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive this week and be distributed across the nation from mid-June to early July. A total of nearly six million vaccine doses have been distributed nationwide so far.
