GEORGE TOWN:
A drunk driver with 38 past summonses rammed his Toyota Vellfire MPV into an MCO roadblock mounted by police at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway last night.

A breathalyser test on the 56-year-old businessman later found him to be five times above the alcohol consumption limit, while his blood alcohol level was recorded at 400mg/100ml.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the 8.30pm incident as 15 policemen on duty managed to avoid the vehicle, but police signage, beacon lights and traffic cones were damaged.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said checks later revealed that the man had 38 traffic summonses issued against him, mostly for speeding offences, all of which the man had settled.

He said the man has been remanded for two days to be investigated for driving under the influence under Section 45(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In Butterworth, six people aged between 21 and 38 who were at a “wild party” were arrested in a house for violating MCO rules. Seberang Perai North police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said four of them tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine use.

Noorzainy also revealed that a total of RM725,500 worth of MCO fines were collected from June 1 to 9, of which RM330,000 were for inter-district travel without a valid police permit.

He said large fines were issued to companies operating without relevant approvals.
