The mobile truck initiative is among four measures being implemented in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan to achieve herd immunity earlier by late August or early September.
Federal territories minister Annuar Musa said the programme was aimed at curbing the spread of the virus in densely populated areas.
“Today’s programme gives priority to the elderly and persons with disabilities with the assistance of the residents’ committee and coordinated through the MySejahtera application.
“This is a proactive measure to boost the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, and enables residents of the Federal Territories to receive the vaccine fast,” he said after viewing the implementation of the pioneer project.
“The project is also aimed at bringing the vaccine to the people as they don’t have to travel out and wait for long to get vaccinated.
“We expect that after getting approval, the mobile operation from June 15 will involve 10 trucks and 39 trucks in July.
“Under this system, the capacity will be up to between 15,000 and 20,000 jabs per day in the Federal Territories,” he said.
380,000 Sinovac doses for Sarawak
In a related development, Sarawak said it will receive 380,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine on Wednesday, enabling the state to speed up its immunisation process to achieve herd immunity as targeted.
Chief minister Abang Johari Openg said this batch of vaccines was part of the amount announced by vaccine coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin during his visit to Sarawak last week.
“Of this amount, 89,360 doses will be sent to Miri on June 10. Our target is to hit one million vaccine jabs by the end of this month,” he said after visiting the Borneo Convention Centre (BCCK) mega vaccination centre today.
Last week, Khairy announced that Sarawak would receive 380,000 doses of vaccine every week beginning the first week of June until the end of August, putting the state on track to be the first in Malaysia to complete its immunisation programme by vaccinating 2.2 million of its population.
On the BCCK vaccination centre, Johari said its first day of operations for administering the AstraZeneca vaccine proceeded smoothly.
“Some 30,000 people registered for the AstraZeneca vaccine in Sarawak, and today 1,000 people got their jabs,” he said.
Apart from BCCK, another vaccination centre for administering the AstraZeneca vaccine has been opened at the national youth skills training centre in Miri, which will operate from today until the end of July.
Johari said Sarawak was using the hybrid method of registering people in rural areas for vaccination through MySejahtera and manually.
However, he said since many rural residents lived far from vaccination centres, they would still be inoculated if they turned without first registering through MySejahtera or the Resident’s Office.
Johari said he had asked all elected representatives to help register people in their constituencies so that Sarawak could achieve herd immunity by the end of August.
1.13 million people fully vaccinated
Meanwhile, health minister Dr Adham Baba said a total of 1,130,301 individuals had completed the two-dose vaccination as of yesterday.
In a Twitter post today, he said 2,444,075 individuals had received the first dose, bringing the number of doses administered in Malaysia so far to 3,574,376.
He said the five states with the highest number of two-dose vaccinations were Selangor with 145,972 doses followed by Sarawak (119,421); Perak (105,546); Kuala Lumpur (101,822); and Johor (98,429).
