MKN director-general Mohd Rabin Basir told Sin Chew Daily that senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob would clarify the matter later today.

“We allow grocery and convenience stores to sell any in-store goods, that is not a problem,” he said.

Rabin also said fines imposed on stores that had failed to section off their ‘non-essential’ items will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Social media users had previously questioned why shops are not allowed from selling certain items that were in stock, such as cleaning supplies and beverages.

The pharmacy chain Caring Pharmacy was also reported to have temporarily stopped selling hair dye, hair gel and facial masks in adherence to lockdown rules, although these products were reported to be still on sale at other pharmacies.

According to Malaysiakini, domestic trade and consumer affairs minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the rule was imposed to prevent overcrowding.

However, he said his ministry would abide by MKN’s decision as it was the “highest decision-making body”.
