4PAM president Ajit Johl said the lack of an immediate statement from Tajuddin on the incident was disrespectful to the passengers, adding that he wanted Prasarana to give an assurance that all affected passengers would be adequately compensated.
While thanking the prime minister for demanding transparency over the incident, Ajit questioned how users can be assured of their protection when they will not be made a part of the task force looking into the matter.
He urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to establish a public transport tribunal to investigate the incident to ensure that users would be represented.
“We are thankful that there were no fatalities in the accident, and Prasarana needs to improve its safety measures to ensure such an accident never happens again,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Subang MP Wong Chen urged Parliament to reconvene so that transport minister Wee Ka Siong may be questioned by a parliamentary select committee over the incident.
“A train crashing into another is not likely to be human error but points towards systemic failure. This government is also systematically failing (or some will say, has no system whatsoever) to contain the pandemic,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Yesterday, Wee said a task force would be set up to investigate the accident, which is the worst in the service’s history since it began operations in 1996. A preliminary report from the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) will also be given to him today.
In response, Wee’s predecessor Loke Siew Fook said the task force must consist of independent experts in the industry and be given freedom to investigate all aspects of the accident.
The DAP leader stressed that the task force’s report must be made public and that follow-up action must be implemented to rectify any weaknesses.
“(This) must be done immediately to restore public confidence in the safety of the country’s public transport system,” he said.
Loke added that action should be taken under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 if the accident was found to have been caused by human negligence.
