Car ripped into two after being struck by lightning, one dead

Five other vehicles were damaged and remnants of firecrackers were found at the scene.

PETALING JAYA:
A man died after his car was struck by lightning and exploded, ripping the car into two at Kampung Sireh, Kota Bharu in Kelantan this evening.

The fire and rescue department said the incident happened at about 5.30pm today, leaving five other vehicles damaged. Remnants of firecrackers were found at the scene.

According to Kosmo!, the incident was believed to have occurred because the car was carrying fireworks when it was struck by lightning.

It reported that the explosion was so big that it had affected houses 100m away from the scene, even breaking the windows of buildings nearby.

Two men who were injured and bleeding after the incident.

Videos of the aftermath of the incident on social media showed the extent of the damage on a mosque and school nearby, while pictures also showed what was believed to be the remnants of the fireworks.

Meanwhile, Kelantan police chief Shafien Mamat said they have not ruled out the possibility that the firecrackers could have caused the explosion.

He was quoted by Harian Metro as saying the victim was thrown some 20m away due to the explosion. The dead man has not been identified yet.

“Four other victims who were in different cars are being treated at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II. The incident caused six vehicles to go up in flames, including the vehicle driven by the deceased.”
