Private hospitals deny claims of ‘whopping cost’ for Covid-19 patients

PETALING JAYA:
Just how much does it cost to treat Covid-19 in a private hospital? It’s exorbitant, says one doctor in Kedah.

The association of private hospitals Malaysia, however, has played down such claims, saying the cost of treating Covid-19 patients is “about the same” nationwide.

Association president Dr Kuljit Singh said however the cost could vary in different states and towns.

It could also depend on the Covid-19 category the patient is treated for, he said, adding that most private hospitals would have walk-in patients, who are in the first three categories, which are less severe cases.

“But when it comes to those who fall under category four and five, which would see them needing intensive care or require respiratory assistance, the cost will be as high as treating infections or surgery,” he told FMT.

Kuljit also said the only difference between treating Covid-19 patients and that of other diseases is that more personal protective equipment is required.

He was asked to comment on a Facebook post by a Kedah-based doctor that the bill to treat Covid-19 patients could come to over RM140,000.

Kuljit went on to say that the cost to treat Covid-19 patients in government hospitals is about the same, although Putrajaya would subsidise the fees for the public.

“It is also expensive for the government.”

Which is why the public, he added, should be grateful to the government for footing the entire cost.

“Hence, they should not take it for granted and should remain vigilant. Adhere to the SOPs.”

In February, Kuljit denied that private hospitals overcharge for the treatment they offer patients.

He said public hospitals incur the same costs “if not more” but these costs are not known to the public, whereas private hospitals would itemise their bills, “which we show our patients”.
