500 allowed at Selangor state mosques for Friday prayers

Selangor is only allowing a limited number of people to pray in mosques and suraus in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Selangor state mosques, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque in Shah Alam and the Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Mosque in Bukit Jelutong, will both be allowed to cater to a maximum of 500 congregants for Friday prayers.

Under SOPs released by the Selangor Islamic religion standing committee for mosques and suraus in the state under the movement control order (MCO), obligatory prayers at the two mosques are capped at 200 people at a time. This includes officials and members of the mosque committee.

Tarawih prayers at the Shah Alam mosque will be limited to 600 people, while the Bukit Jelutong mosque will allow a maximum of 550 to perform the prayers, Bernama reported.

“Institutional mosques” are allowed to have a maximum of 200 worshippers for Friday and obligatory prayers, while tarawih prayers are capped at 200 male congregants.

“Kariah mosques” may only have 100 people for these prayers. For tarawih prayers, only 100 male worshippers may be present.

Suraus holding congregational prayers may only allow 50 and only male congregants are allowed for tarawih prayers.

“For surau kariah, up to 50 worshippers are allowed to perform Friday prayers while tarawih prayers are limited to 50 male congregants,” said the committee.

The six districts under MCO in Selangor are Petaling, Hulu Langat, Gombak, Klang, Sepang and Kuala Langat.

The latest SOPs for non-Muslim houses of worship in areas under MCO state that not more than 30 people are allowed to be present at a time. However, this is subject to the state government’s consideration.
