PETALING JAYA:
Police have dismissed claims that a CCTV recording of a man being assaulted in a room was the detainee who succumbed to injuries, alleged to have been inflicted in custody, recently.

Gombak police chief Arifai Tarawe said authorities will take action against the individual who claimed that the man in the video, which has since gone viral, was A Ganapathy, Harian Metro reported.

“I deny this (allegation). Stern action will be taken against the irresponsible parties,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily.

The 54-second clip shows a man being repeatedly hit with a rubber hose and also kicked by two men. Another six men are present in the room, smiling as they watch the assault taking place.

Arifai also said they were investigating the assault and were trying to determine where it took place.

Ganapathy, 40, was said to have spent 12 days in police custody from Feb 24 to March 8 before being admitted to hospital.

He succumbed to his injuries last week after spending over a month at the Selayang Hospital’s intensive care unit.

His mother claimed that he was beaten by police while in detention. He had been arrested to assist in investigations into his sibling’s alleged crimes.
