Two more food stall operators hit with RM50,000 fine

Kelantan police chief Shafien Mamat says they will reduce the fines of all three operators according to the guidelines.

PETALING JAYA:
Police have revealed today that two more food stall operators in Kelantan were issued with a RM50,000 compound fine for allegedly operating past the permitted hours under the movement control order (MCO).

The revelation comes after burger stall operator Wan Mohd Faisal Wan Kadir’s plight went viral, sparking an outcry from politicians, rights groups and the man on the street.

In a statement, Kelantan police chief Shafien Mamat said both the food stall operators were compounded by the police on the same day that the burger seller was fined for committing a similar offence on Sunday night.

However, Shafein said the state police have now decided to review the cases by calling all the three traders (including Wan Mohd Faisal) to the state police headquarters to offer them the compound rate according to the guidelines set for offences under Act 342.

In a separate press conference, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob had also decried the RM50,000 fine, saying that such large fines were only supposed to be for companies. He said de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan had already explained the categories of compound amounts.

However, he said the issuing of compounds came under the police while the amount to be charged was under the health ministry’s purview.

Meanwhile, Shafien said police had stepped up their enforcement against those violating the SOP following the recent spate of Covid-19 cases in the state, with the state ending up being placed under the MCO.

“Kelantan was placed under MCO from April 16 until 29. Between April 16 and yesterday, a total of 127 compounds were issued,” he added.
