Burger seller flips out after RM50,000 MCO fine

Wan Mohd Faisal Wan Kadir says there were no customers at his stall when he was approached by policemen at 11pm.

Kota Bharu burger seller Wan Mohd Faisal Wan Kadir says he was stunned when five policemen came to his stall at 11pm.
PETALING JAYA:
A burger stall operator in Kelantan said he was left stunned after authorities slapped him with a RM50,000 compound fine for allegedly operating past the permitted hours under the movement control order.

Wan Mohd Faisal Wan Kadir, 38, said he was approached by five police officers around 11pm as he was preparing burgers at his house in Kampung Rambutan Rendang, Kota Bharu.

He said there were no customers around when a group of policemen arrived, adding that since the MCO came into effect, he had only accepted orders for takeaways.

“We won’t allow customers to dine in as we do not want to breach the SOP. So I was shocked. And the fine issued was too high. RM50,000 is unreasonable,” he told FMT.

Faisal said he would have understood if a fine was issued because of customers crowding around and not observing social distancing at his stall, which is located in front of his house.

He said the authorities should have at least issued a warning before taking punitive action. Faisal said the policemen revealed they had no choice but to take action as a complaint had been filed.

He was also told he could appeal the fine and pay only RM1,000.

Faisal said that he had to take additional orders from customers past 10pm as operating hours had been shortened throughout the fasting month.“Many of my customers buy my burgers after 9pm.”

He said he has appealed for the fine to be reduced as the sum was too high for a mere burger seller.

State executive councillor Dr Izani Husin said he would seek an explanation from the police over the matter.
