
The faculty said their professor’s admission into the council was a proud moment as it was a high-level group comprising prominent scholars.
According to WHO’s website, the Science Council is the “voice of scientific leadership” advising about priority matters related to science, and advances in science and technology impacting global health.
The council members, WHO says, comprise “internationally-renowned experts with an outstanding record of achievements in their own field and a proven understanding of global health”.
Currently a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at UM, Adeeba is also part of the G25 prominent and moderate Malays group.
She also founded the Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS that conducts multidisciplinary research on HIV, ranging from clinical to public health and policy research.
Adeeba is currently the Malaysian AIDS Foundation chairman and Malaysian AIDS Council executive council member.
She also has the honour of having been featured in both The Lancet and Science publications in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Last year, Adeeba made history as the first Asian to be made International AIDS Society president.
