Azmin, who is the Perikatan Nasional information chief, said he was certain that it was Anwar’s voice in the recording.
“As an officer who used to serve under Anwar and was his former private secretary, I am confident the recording is genuine and it will be proved as such during the upcoming investigations,” he told the media after attending a Ramadan event here today.
“I think this is the biggest treachery Anwar has committed, not just against his party but also against Pakatan Harapan as PKR is a component party.”
Azmin also called on the authorities to launch investigations into the recording’s authenticity.
“I feel this (investigation process) will give all parties space to defend themselves, and I hope they will both be truthful, at least with the members of their respective parties.”
Earlier this week, home minister Hamzah Zainudin said the ministry would investigate the authenticity of the viral audio recording.
Both Zahid and Anwar have denied they were the ones in the audio recording and police have begun probing the case after receiving several reports.
The conversation allegedly took place after Umno’s annual general assembly last month and gives the impression that the two leaders are working together.
This is especially surprising as in his opening speech at the assembly on March 28, Zahid had said the party would contest under the Barisan Nasional banner in the next general election and would not work with PPBM, DAP or Anwar.
