Zahid said in today’s digital world, anything could be fabricated, including “videos, photographs and a recording of a phone call” as there were apps for it.
Hence, he added, there was a need to go all out against such accusations and lies.
“What we need to do is counter such allegations with proper facts,” he said in a Facebook post calling for party members to be more active and make their presence felt on social media.
His comments come in the wake of an audio recording of a purported phone call between him and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim soon after the Umno annual general assembly last month.
Zahid has since denied the allegation, saying he had not communicated with Anwar and that the fake recording was a malicious political ploy to bring down his party.
Anwar too, has also denied it, saying there were people with voices sounding like his. He added he would instruct his officer to lodge a police report so that the authorities could investigate the matter.
Zahid went on to remind the party that social media had led to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) downfall in the last general election (GE14).
There were numerous lies, claims and negative narratives that led to the people turning against Umno and BN.
“And it continues till today.”
