
“It would have been inappropriate for us to take any action during the funeral procession.
“However, we did act immediately after that and an investigation was done,” he told reporters after attending an event here.
On Tuesday, police detained five men over the funeral procession of a gang member in Kuala Lumpur. Firecrackers were also set off during the procession.
A video recording of the noisy funeral procession, showing a hearse passing through different parts of the city, was widely shared on WhatsApp.
A man’s picture along with flowers spelling the number 36, said to be in reference to Gang 36, were displayed on the front of the vehicle.
According to Brickfields police chief Anuar Omar, medical officers from Hospital Kuala Lumpur confirmed that the deceased was a 28-year-old man who was killed in a road accident on Sunday.
He said police arrested five men, aged between 18 and 26, after the funeral procession and also seized several vehicles in five raids.
Meanwhile, Hamzah said police did not plan to revive the Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gambling and Gangsterism (STAGG), Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc) and Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING).
“For now, we are doing fine and there is no need to revive them,” he added.
