BUTTERWORTH:
A 48-year-old man has been arrested after a 5km chase when he drove away from a police check on drink-driving offenders at the Butterworth outer ring road here yesterday.

Seberang Perai Utara police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the police had flagged down the driver of a Mini Cooper car at about 10pm but the driver sped off instead.

“Police gave chase until Taman Robena, about 5km away, until the car crashed into a Perodua MyVi vehicle. The suspect got out and tried to flee but was apprehended. Tests found that the amount of alcohol exceeded the prescribed limit,” he said.

He said police also arrested a 25-year-old man for riding a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol.

Noorzainy said police also detained six youths, including three students, aged 16 to 21, for endangering the lives of other road users by taking part in illegal races at the ring road.

He said they were competing among themselves while riding in zigzags and performing “superman stunts” from Km8 to Km6 on the Perai-bound lane.

He said they had been remanded for further investigations.
