‘Hotpot Datuk’ and accomplice to be freed on police bail

Magistrates’ court rejects extension of remand order.

The argument began after a customer asked those seated at another table at a restaurant not to make too much noise.
PETALING JAYA:
The magistrates’ court here has dismissed an application by the police to extend the remand of two businessmen involved in the highly publicised assault of another two customers at a hotpot restaurant last Tuesday.

Lawyer Suraj Singh said the court rejected the application to hold the duo, one of whom is a Datuk, for another three days.

Suraj said he argued against the extension of remand on the grounds that the suspects had cooperated with police investigations and posed no threat to the victims, a young man and his girlfriend.

He said the suspects would likely be out on police bail this evening.

They are being investigated for assault and criminal intimidation, he added.

Both men surrendered to Mutiara Damansara police station on Thursday at 2pm and police obtained a remand order the next day to hold them until today.

The incident at the restaurant in Tropicana Avenue, hours before the movement control order came into force on Wednesday, sparked fury among Malaysians after two video clips went viral.

An argument broke out after a young man asked the Datuk and his friends to lower their voices.

Two men, believed to have been inebriated, slapped the man before one of them hit the victim’s girlfriend on their way out of the restaurant.
