KOTA KINABALU:
Warisan has shot down a suggestion by its ally Upko on the urgency for the opposition to have a shadow Cabinet.

Warisan Youth deputy chief Ismail Ayub said such a set up was not a priority during this difficult period when the people were grappling with Covid-19.

“The focus now should be to help the people in terms of economy and health instead of continuing with the politicking.

“In facing the pandemic and the weaknesses in the federal government now, the opposition must play the role of check and balance,” he said in a statement here today.

He claimed there were many shortcomings in Perikatan Nasional’s administration, asking what SOPs had been outlined for the first target group to receive the Covid-19 vaccine and when the vaccine would arrive in the country.

Yesterday, Upko president and Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau urged opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to form a shadow Cabinet within a week.

The former Sabah deputy chief minister also pleaded with Anwar to work out the opposition’s alternative policies on the pandemic and economy.

Ismail also questioned what the government would do for the countless people who lost their jobs and had to shut down their business due to the health crisis.

“What is actually PN’s plans to revive the economy? The government needs to plan this carefully and give priority to matters that actually benefit the people and not megaprojects costing billions of ringgit.

“We are not against development but we don’t need such projects in times like these,” he said.

Ismail added that it was time for Malaysia to be administered by new and younger faces.

“The opposition must clearly indicate to the people that the next government will be made up of leaders who’ll fight for unity and have a clear vision of clean governance.”
