Andaman Resort fire shocks many

Things go from bad to worse for hotel as blaze adds to MCO woes, but some suspect foul play.

Photographs of the burning resort have gone viral on social media, and many lament the damage to the beautiful island hotel.
PETALING JAYA:
With tourists already flocking out of Langkawi due to the movement control order (MCO) and the emergency, the Andaman Resort on the island took a bigger hit – a part of the hotel was destroyed in a fire.

Social media users were shocked to see videos of the burning resort today.

The fire reportedly started yesterday night and was only brought under control earlier this afternoon. The resort’s kitchen is believed to have been completely destroyed with further unconfirmed damage.

One social media user, Chris Almazan, said he was due to celebrate his birthday at the resort but had not gone there because of the interstate travel ban under the MCO.

“Despite all the things happening around me, I should be grateful,” he said.

Another user Ramakrishnan CM was in disbelief at the news of the fire at the beautiful resort.

“Unreal, we were just there some time ago.” he said. “Praying for the safety and livelihood of all the extremely nice and friendly staff there.”

Bernama reported that a building in the five-star resort in Jalan Teluk Datai here was destroyed after catching fire twice within 10 hours.

A spokesman of the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department said fire first broke out at about 4.04pm yesterday before it happened again after midnight at the same place.

He said the fire was fanned by strong winds and spread rapidly to engulf almost the entire block of the building.

He said the firefighters had to shoot torrents of water from a water tender at the south and north wings stretching some 100ft.

In a media statement, the resort’s management said they had moved swiftly to evacuate the hotel.

They said their guests have been relocated to their sister property and investigations are ongoing.
