Kok’s suit against Jamal goes to trial after 4 years

Four years after filing a defamation suit, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok will finally get her day in court over allegations on abuse of state funds.

Teresa Kok seeks general, aggravated and exemplary damages as well as an injunction against Jamal Yunos from publicising further defamatory statements.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Four years after Seputeh MP Teresa Kok filed a defamation suit against Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos over his allegations on abuse of state funds, the High Court has finally fixed a date to hear the case.

SN Nair, who is appearing for Kok, said the seven-day trial before Judicial Commissioner Quay Chew Soon will begin on May 27.

“The trial dates were fixed today via virtual case management before Quay,” he said.

Mohammed Nasser Yusof appeared for Jamal.

The trial for Kok’s suit was delayed as Jamal had filed a striking out application, which failed in the Court of Appeal last year.

In her lawsuit filed in 2017, Kok claimed Jamal’s statements had tarnished her reputation as a senior politician in DAP and painted her as a corrupt person.

“The accusations by Jamal were baseless as I did not abuse my powers to obtain funds from Yawas (Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor),” she said in her statement of claim.

She sought general, aggravated and exemplary damages as well as an injunction against Jamal from publicising further defamatory statements.

Jamal alleged in 2017 that politicians from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor had taken funds meant for welfare aid from Yawas instead of disbursing the money to eligible recipients.
