249 people arrested for MCO-related offences

Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob says one person was remanded and the rest issued compound fines.

Police and other enforcement personnel have been carrying out checks to ensure people observe SOPs to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The authorities arrested 249 individuals yesterday for offences in relation to the movement control order.

Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said all, except for one, were issued compound fines. The remaining person was remanded.

Among the offences were not wearing face masks, failure to register or provide materials for contact tracing, and not observing physical distancing.

A total of 2,777 compliance task force teams, comprising some 12,000 officers, were deployed to conduct checks on supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

Ismail also said the authorities detained 46 foreigners and two smugglers under Ops Benteng. Eight vehicles were also confiscated.

He added that 88,827 people had arrived through KLIA between July 24 and Dec 18 from various countries.

A total of 532 people tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 79,938 were allowed to return home.

Some 8,357 people are currently undergoing mandatory quarantine.
