280 healthcare workers being treated for Covid-19

29 workers and 28 patients have been found to be infected at Serdang hospital.

PETALING JAYA:
A total of 280 healthcare workers are being treated in hospital for Covid-19 while 43 were reported to be infected today, health director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

He said those being treated in hospital are in stable condition, with the recovery rate at 84.2%.

Noor Hisham said that 28 patients at Hospital Serdang have also tested positive, along with 29 healthcare workers there. All of them have been sent to Hospital Sungai Buloh for further treatment.

He urged the public to limit their hospital visits, in order to give space for healthcare workers to carry out their duties and to protect high risk groups such as the elderly from Covid-19.

Almost 1,700 healthcare workers are in quarantine, either at home or at quarantine stations.

Noor Hisham said a total of 1,771 healthcare workers have tested positive for Covid-19 so far. Among the total number were 690 nurses, 211 medical officers, 146 healthcare assistants, 144 assistant medical officers and 84 graduate medical officers.

He said 1,359 were detected during the third wave of the pandemic, from September; 587 caught the virus within the community, 565 infections were spread among healthcare workers on duty and 152 were infected by Covid-19 patients.

Noor Hisham said the cause of 409 infections were still under investigation, while the causes for another 58 cases were unknown.

Most infections were detected at hospitals within the Klang Valley, including Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Rahimah Klang (HTAR) with 54 cases, Hospital Serdang (29), Hospital Sungai Buloh (15), Hospital Kuala Lumpur (10), Hospital Ampang (five) and Hospital Selayang (four).

“The surge of cases among healthcare workers in the Klang Valley is believed to be closely related to the rise in cases within the community,” said Noor Hisham, adding that a similar situation had also occurred in Sabah.

He said the spread of infections was under control, and that healthcare services in all the involved hospitals will continue without any disruptions.

Commenting on the high number of cases in HTAR, Noor Hisham said the hospital staff were currently working with the district health office to identify close contacts and to investigate the cause of the spread.
