KUALA LUMPUR:
The Federal Territories ministry budget was approved after a heated argument between MPs from both sides of the divide, over MPs under quarantine.

It started with opposition MPs raising concerns over the presence of three MPs in the Dewan Rakyat despite being asked to quarantine at home for Covid-19.

Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun said an MP from the opposition had attended the debate on the 2021 budget last Thursday despite having come into contact with a person who had Covid-19.

“He had voted. I don’t want it to repeat. I want to regulate it better,” he told opposition MPs today.

But the MPs were not satisfied with the reply, stating the new SOPs were exposing them to the novel virus.

But Azhar said the three MPs have tested negative so far.

This saw a majority of opposition MPs walking out in protest of the new ruling on Covid-19.

A vote was then held on the RM956 million budget for the Federal Territories ministry, where RM256 million was allocated for expenditure and RM700 million will go towards development.

The budget was approved through bloc vote, with 110 MPs voting for it and only seven against. A total of 31 MPs abstained and 72 did not vote after walking out of the Dewan.

Earlier, Azhar said three MPs under quarantine will be brought to the Parliament building in ambulances, wearing personal protective equipment (PPEs) and be ushered into a special room so they can vote on the 2021 budget.

“They must be wearing personal protective equipment.

“If they want to vote, they will have to change into another set of PPE and will then be placed at the public gallery,” Azhar said.

It was reported yesterday that the three MPs are Health Minister Dr Adham Baba (BN-Tenggara), Human Resources Minister M Saravanan (BN-Tapah) and P Prabakaran (PH-Batu).
