Putrajaya to set up panel on houses of worship

Committee will identify unregistered houses of worship and recommend action to be taken, says unity minister.

National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique says the proposed committee will determine the status of unregistered houses of worship.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Putrajaya will set up a committee to identify unregistered houses of worship and determine their status, following the demolition of a Hindu temple in Kedah.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique said the committee, which will involve her ministry, would propose follow-up actions based on local council regulations and state laws.

“I have discussed with the housing and local government minister (Zuraida Kamaruddin) and local councils on the establishment of the committee involving my ministry,” she said.

She was responding to Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah), who wanted her to elaborate on the issue of temple demolitions.

The recent demolition of the temple by the Alor Setar City Council last week sparked controversy and led to a war of words between Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and MIC leaders.

The Sri Raja Muniswarar Temple at Taman Bersatu, Kuala Kedah, is said to be over 50 years old.
