Sheikh Omar Sheikh Ali said Umno’s 14 seats, with the 27 held by PH, will form a majority that is more than two thirds of the assembly.
“This position is very stable and convincing. The question about (whether the parties) agreeing or not, that’s another story. But looking at the numbers, then yes, if Umno and PH work together in Johor, it will further strengthen the position of the state government,” said Sheikh Omar, who is assemblyman for Paloh.
His suggestion of an Umno-PH government comes in the wake of the ouster of Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu by a confidence vote at the Perak state assembly today.
Faizal, who is also deputy president of PPBM, headed the Perikatan Nasional state government formed by PPBM (5 seats), PAS (3) and Umno (25).
Following the vote, PAS said it would not be part of a new state government, leading to speculation that Umno might need to team up with Amanah (5 seats) and PKR (3) to form a government without PAS and PPBM.
Johor’s current state government, led by Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad, was formed by an alliance of PPBM and Umno in February after PPBM left Pakatan Harapan, causing the collapse of the ruling coalition.
Barisan Nasional holds 16 seats in the 56-seat Johor state assembly, comprising 14 from Umno and two from MIC. Perikatan Nasional holds 13 seats, 12 from PPBM and one from PAS.
The opposition PH holds 27 seats, of which 14 are from DAP, nine from Amanah and four from PKR.
