KOTA BHARU:
A “gold rush” of customers thronging jewellery shops, following a drop in gold prices, has led to fines on customers and shop owners for failure to abide by Covid-19 protocols.

Kelantan police said 23 compound notices were issued since yesterday.

State police chief Shafien Mamat said 35 gold shops around Kota Bharu were being monitored to ensure that owners and customers comply with rules on physical distancing and wearing face masks.

“The owners of the premises also failed to provide other temperature scanners and hand sanitisers because they might have been too busy serving their customers,” he told reporters.

The police urged the community to comply with the rules in order to break the chain of Covid-19 infections.

“So far we have instructed them (shop owners and patrons) to comply. However, if they are still stubborn, the police will work with the local authorities to take action to close the premises,” he said.

He urged shopkeepers to hire Rela volunteers for crowd control.
