PETALING JAYA:
The Perak state assembly speaker has accepted a motion of confidence in Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

The motion, for the coming assembly sitting on Dec 4, was submitted by Pengkalan Bharu assemblyman Abdul Manaf Hashim, who is from Umno.

It has been included in the sitting’s agenda.

“We see no reason why this motion should be rejected or how it goes against the Standing Orders,” Perak Speaker Mohamad Zahir Abdul Khalid told FMT.

When contacted, Manaf declined to comment on why he proposed the motion of confidence.

The proposed motion comes amid strained ties between Umno and PPBM in the state. It also follows Faizal’s move to appoint an Umno representative as his political secretary without first consulting Umno leaders.

The issue of the appointment of village chiefs is another sore point with Perak Umno leaders.

One Perak Umno insider previously told FMT that if a motion of no confidence was tabled against Faizal, the Chenderiang assemblyman may not get full support from Umno’s elected representatives.

More recently, Perak Umno liaison chief Saarani Mohamad warned Faizal against playing politics, saying he should focus on the people’s welfare instead.

Speaker Zahir is from Umno and a former Perak exco under the previous Barisan Nasional state government. He was a two-term state assemblyman for Kamunting before losing the seat to Pakatan Harapan in the last general election in May 2018.
