PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian virologist Dr Lam Sai Kit has been named to an international task force to look into the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic and identify strategies to prevent pandemics.

Lam, a research consultant with Universiti Malaya and a senior fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, is an internationally recognised expert on dengue and was involved in the discovery of the Nipah virus in 1998.

He said the task force had been given 12 months to conduct a rigorous review of all available information on the origins and early control of the pandemic, and identify strategies for pandemic prevention.

The 12-member task force is led by Dr Peter Daszak, a disease ecologist who spent years studying coronavirus transmission in China and Southeast Asia.

The task force is part of a Covid-19 commission set up by the Lancet, a weekly medical journal. It will investigate the origins and early spread of Covid-19, said Daszak in a statement.
