Penang mulls pay cuts for assemblymen to aid Covid-19 effort

Penang CM Chow Kon Yeow says the money saved from salaries paid to assemblymen will go towards the purchase of food rations for the marginalised.

Chow Kon Yeow is proposing all members of the Penang legislative assembly take a pay cut to help those affected by the pandemic.
GEORGE TOWN:
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today said his government was considering pay cuts for all 40 state assemblymen with the amount saved going towards the state’s Covid-19 fund.

The state government had instituted a similar move in March.

At a press conference today, Chow said if the pay cuts were implemented, it would be for the purchase of food rations for the marginalised, besides helping frontliners as well.

Previously, Chow and his exco members donated their full April salaries to the fund, to expedite the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers. The other assemblymen took a 30% pay cut for the same purpose.

In March, the federal government cut the salaries of all ministers and their deputies for two months.
