Speaker informs EC of Gerik MP’s death

The Election Commission has to fill the seat within 60 days after it falls vacant.

Gerik MP Hasbullah Osman died on Monday after suffering a heart attack.
PETALING JAYA:
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun today said he has informed the Election Commission (EC) about the death of Gerik MP Hasbullah Osman.

“In line with Article 54 Clause (1) of the Federal Constitution, the Election Commission (EC) has to fill the P54 Gerik, Perak, seat within 60 days after the EC confirms the seat has fallen vacant,” said Azhar in a statement.

Azhar also expressed his condolences to Hasbullah’s family.

Hasbullah, the head of the Umno Gerik division, died on Monday at his wife’s hometown in Raub, Pahang, after suffering a heart attack. He was 63.

He was elected to the Gerik seat during the 2018 general election when he defeated a PAS candidate with a majority of more than 5,000 votes.
