2 company directors to face river pollution charge

Six employees of the construction machinery company will be called as witnesses, say police.

Klang Valley residents went without water for a few days in September and October because of river pollution.
PETALING JAYA:
Two company directors are to be charged at the Selayang Sessions Court tomorrow morning over pollution of Sungai Gong, a tributary of Sungai Selangor in Rawang.

Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat said the two company directors, a father and son aged 62 and 31 respectively, will be charged under the Penal Code and the Environmental Quality Act.

“Six employees of the company, comprising two Malaysians and four foreigners, will stand as witnesses. They are between the ages of 25 to 66,” he said in a statement today.

Fadzil said the police are currently investigating five cases related to pollution. “The Selangor CID will ensure that investigation and prosecution will be taken against those who commit such crimes,” he added.

The two directors and six workers of the construction machinery company had been detained on Oct 21 to facilitate investigations in Rawang.

Nearly 1.2 million Air Selangor households in the Klang Valley experienced unscheduled water supply disruptions on Oct 19 after four Sungai Selangor water treatment plants were shut down due to contamination of raw water sources.

Some 1,292 areas went without water for a few days after odour pollution was detected in Sungai Selangor, with investigators tracing the odour to Sungai Gong.

Earlier in September, another pollution incident in Sungai Gong had caused unscheduled water cuts for several days, affecting 1.2 million households in 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley.
