PH leaders attend Budget brainstorm session at finance ministry

The opposition leaders were invited by finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz to offer proposals on Budget 2021.

Several Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders have begun arriving at the finance ministry to hold discussions and offer their proposals for Budget 2021 before it is tabled in Parliament on Friday.

Among the PKR leaders who were seen arriving from 2.30pm were Saifuddin Nasution, Wong Chen, Akmal Nasir and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Among the DAP leaders seen at the ministry were Lim Guan Eng, Ong Kian Ming and Tony Pua. Amanah’s Mohamad Sabu and Dzulkefly Ahmad were also present.

Subang MP Wong Chen said PKR had six suggestions for finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and will issue a statement after the meeting.

On Thursday, the PH presidential council said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should uphold the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s order by holding immediate discussions and negotiations with the opposition on the upcoming Budget before it is tabled.

The council said it was confident that all MPs would engage in a healthy debate to ensure that Budget 2021 prioritises the interests of the country and the people and meets the aspirations as stated by the King.

On Wednesday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah advised MPs to support the upcoming Budget 2021 in the interest of the rakyat.

In a statement, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the King stressed that the Budget will be crucial for the government and authorities to continue combating the Covid-19 pandemic effectively.

He also said the King reminded MPs that political disputes for personal interests will be detrimental to the nation, especially in view of the pandemic.
