Taiwan cops arrest suspect in murder of Malaysian female student

The 24-year-old student was strangled with a rope during a suspected sexual assault attempt.

PETALING JAYA:
Taiwan police arrested a suspect who confessed to strangling to death a Malaysian woman and disposing of her body after she went missing on Wednesday evening.

Initial police investigations confirmed that the 24-year-old woman, who was studying in a university in Taiwan, was abducted while she was walking alone near her university.

The suspect, whose last name was Liang, confessed to killing and discarding the body, Focus Taiwan reported.

He was brought in after investigators traced his vehicle, parked near the crime scene, seen on CCTV footage.

Police found the woman, only clad in underwear, with a rope around her neck.

Police suspect Liang had planned to sexually assault the student. He is believed to have surprised the woman, who was walking alone.

Police said he allegedly used a rope to restrain the victim and drag her to his car. In the process, the woman died.
