PETALING JAYA:
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun says a by-election must be held for the Batu Sapi seat following the death of the MP, Liew Vui Keong.

Azhar said the Election Commission (EC) must fill the seat within 60 days from the date it declares the seat as vacant, in line with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution.

In a statement, he said he had issued a notification to the EC chairman, dated today, of Liew’s death last Friday.

The EC has yet to declare the seat as vacant.

Liew, a former de facto law minister, was 60 when he died in Kota Kinabalu. He had reportedly been suffering from lung infection and was admitted to the Gleneagles Hospital there.
