Another 2 Covid-19 deaths, 89 new cases

The positive cases include 86 local transmissions, the health ministry said today.

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry reported two new Covid-19 deaths today, pushing the mortality number to 136.

Also, 89 new Covid-19 infections were reported today, 86 of which were local transmissions. The other three were imported cases.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brought the total number of Covid-19 infections to 11,224.

He also said 28 people were discharged, bringing the number of recoveries in the country to 9,967.

There are currently 1,121 active cases, with 16 of them under intensive care, and three needing respiratory assistance.

Sabah reported the most number cases with 35, followed by Kedah (13), Selangor (10) and Johor (8).

Noor Hisham said based on information reported to the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC), there were two new deaths.

The 135th fatality involved a 46-year-old Malaysian man with a history of diabetes, besides having heart and kidney problems.

He started showing symptoms on Sept 21 and on Sept 28, he suffered breathing problems and was brought to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Kedah, where his condition deteriorated until he was pronounced dead at 6.15pm the same day.

A Covid-19 test found that he was positive.

Meanwhile, death number 136 was a 70-year-old Malaysian man with late-stage cancer. He died at his home on Sept 26 and was brought to the forensic unit at Hospital Tawau in Sabah where he was found to be Covid-19 positive on Sept 29.

On the new cases today, Noor Hisham said the local transmissions comprised 84 Malaysians and two foreigners, with 25 persons having travel history to Sabah.

He added that the Sabah returnees testing positive were from Selangor (5), Sarawak (3), Kuala Lumpur (3), Terengganu (3), Pahang (2), Kedah (2), Perlis (2), Johor (1), Negeri Sembilan (1), Perak (1), Penang (1) and Labuan (1).

“This pushes the total number of cases with travel histories to Sabah since Sept 20, 2020 to 88 cases,” the health DG said in a statement.

On the 35 new cases in Sabah, 18 were symptomatic screenings. Nine were from the Bangau-Bangau cluster, three were close-contact screenings and four were from the Benteng LD cluster.

“One was from a post-death screening at Hospital Tawau,” he said, adding that all the positive cases from Sabah today were Malaysians.

Meanwhile, on the 10 new Selangor cases, five were from Sabah. Two patients were identified during symptomatic screenings, and two were from workplace screenings – all involving Malaysians. Another case involved a foreigner identified during pre-departure screenings before returning to the country of origin.

In Kedah, five new cases were from close-contact screenings, three were from the new Tembok cluster, one was from the Sungai cluster, two were from symptomatic screenings and two were from Sabah. Noor Hisham added that the cases all involved Malaysians.

On the eight new cases from Johor, seven were from the Bakawali cluster and one was from screenings of returnees from Sabah.

“The health ministry has mobilised a support team to Tawau, Lahad Datu, Semporna, and Kunak, in Sabah to help manage the Covid-19 situation there.

“This support team will help with contact tracing, community screenings, and managing quarantine centres and hospitals.”

He added that 10 microbiologists and five lab technicians have been sent to Hospital Tawau, Hospital Lahad Datu, Hospital Queen Elizabeth, the Likas Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Kota Kinabalu public health laboratory to help with the Covid-19 screening process at the laboratories.

Of the three imported cases, he said two were from Denmark and one from Indonesia.
