LAHAD DATU:
Former federal tourism minister Mohamaddin Ketapi of Warisan Plus has ridden out a recent controversy over the 2013 Lahad Datu incursion, to be elected the new state assemblyman for Segama.

Mohamaddin polled 4,864 votes to win by a 2,168 majority in an eight-cornered contest against rivals from Perikatan Nasional (2,696 votes), Parti Cinta Sabah (570), Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (135), Independent (510), Liberal Democratic Party (67), Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah (399) and Usno (39).

Segama is one of the 13 new seats in the Sabah state assembly.

Mohamaddin, who is MP for Silam (now renamed Lahad Datu), sparked widespread criticism from Barisan Nasional leaders during the campaign for allegedly describing the Malaysian security forces as having taken part in a “sandiwara” (a farce, or staged show) when 200 Sulu militants attacked Lahad Datu in 2013.

After severe backlash over his remarks, Mohamaddin made an apology but said his remarks had been taken out of context.
