KUALA LUMPUR:
The government is studying the possibility of opening borders to travellers from green zone cities rather than waiting for an entire country to become a green zone.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri told the Dewan Rakyat today that this would be more practical as some countries, which were previously considered green zones, had seen a resurgence in Covid-19 cases.

Citing the example of Australia, she said the whole country could not be classified as a green zone as Melbourne had been hit with a second wave of Covid-19 infections.

“So, we look at it from the perspective of Malaysia and Perth. This is what we are studying,” she said in response to Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian), who asked if the government was planning to allow entry to tourists from green zone areas.

Previously, the government said it was in discussion with a number of green zone countries on the reopening of borders.

Nancy said the reopening of borders must be reciprocal and that her ministry, along with the health and foreign ministries, were working together on the matter.
