Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin said the 126 people were detained in operations by the National Registration Department.

“The home ministry and the department are always committed to hunting down users (of fake ICs) and forgers by conducting enforcement operations throughout the country in collaboration with other agencies,” he said in a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat.

Wan Hassan Ramli (PAS-Dungun) had asked about fake ICs and security measures to be taken in the future.

Hamzah said the ministry would be carrying out undercover operations and enforcement operations more frequently. Action would be taken against officers or personnel suspected to be involved in producing forged ICs and the cases would be forwarded to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for further investigation.

“The government is also improving existing laws and regulations to increase the effectiveness of enforcement and transactions related to the issuance of ID cards.”
