
He said he had only written to the judge, asking that consideration be given to Najib who is Pekan MP.
“We hold to the doctrine that the powers of the court and the executive are equal,” he said.
“I asked the judge to consider my letter for him to attend Parliament. I did not order the judge,” he said.
Chang Lih Kang (PH-Tanjong Malim) had raised the issue, asking why Azhar wrote to the judge asking for court proceedings to be postponed.
High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah had halted proceedings early at 3.15pm instead of 4.30pm last Thursday after receiving a letter from the Dewan Rakyat.
Dismissing Najib’s request for the trial to end by lunch-time, he instead ordered for proceedings to continue through the lunch break.
In that case, Najib faces four counts of abuse of power for using his position as prime minister, finance minister and chairman of 1MDB’s board of directors to receive gratification worth RM2.28 billion.
He also faces 21 counts of money laundering involving over RM4.3 billion.
