PETALING JAYA:
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri has called on Malaysians to “travel domestic” in a bid to save the tourism industry which, like many others, is reeling from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a video on the ministry’s Facebook page, she said tens of thousands of businesses as well as millions of Malaysians depended directly or indirectly on the tourism sector to put food on the table.

She said the government was still initiating programmes and activities to stimulate the country’s tourism industry.

“But my fellow Malaysians, to truly save it I humbly ask you to consider one thing: travel domestic.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri.

“Plan a day trip, weekend getaway, or more. Just travel domestic.

“Stay in our beautiful hotels, resorts, homestays and hostels. Enjoy our beaches, dive sites and golf courses. Don’t resist the local makan (food).”

Cautioning travellers to continue practising social distancing, wearing face masks and using hand sanitiser, she urged Malaysians to visit the country’s many Instagram-worthy hotspots, theme parks and national parks, and to book trips with tour companies, guides and operators.

“Travel with our bus operators, our trains, airlines, ferries and riverboats. There’s so much to see and do in Malaysia – just go.

“Rediscover the joy of travelling domestic. Together, let’s help save Malaysia’s tourism sector and help our fellow Malaysians. The time is now.”
