Chief Minister Shafie Apdal issued the directive today and ordered that they only undergo 14 days’ quarantine at home.

“Parents will be responsible in ensuring that all the quarantine procedures set by the state health authorities are complied with,” he said in a statement.

Shafie, however, said students with symptoms would be ordered to go to quarantine centres based on the evaluation and recommendation of health authorities.

The directive comes on the heels of the health ministry’s recommendation that all students from Sabah and Sarawak be sent to quarantine centres, preferably in Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching in Sarawak, despite having undergone 14-day quarantine elsewhere.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in saying this, cited the risk of lack of healthcare facilities if students from the rural areas were sent directly home.
