Penang latest to ban Ramadan bazaars over virus fears

The state follows similar moves in other states.

Ramadan bazaars are traditionally held throughout the country during the fasting month.
GEORGE TOWN:
The Penang government today announced a ban on Ramadan bazaars during the upcoming fasting month, as part of measures to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the decision was made this morning.

“The matter was decided after taking into account the safety and health of the people in the state,” he told a press conference today.

Penang had earlier stopped issuing licences for the month-long food fair.

Melaka, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor have cancelled the bazaars, traditionally held in Malaysia throughout the fasting month.

Putrajaya has yet to decide on whether to allow Ramadan bazaars.
