Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization Malaysia president Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani said some 200,000 Rohingya in the country had been living in hardship since the MCO took effect on March 18.
He said almost none of them had permanent jobs as they work mostly on odd jobs in construction as well as the restaurant and janitorial sectors.
He said an emergency response was needed as the situation had become critical.
“Most of these refugees are struggling to survive and they do not have any money saved. Now they are at home without any means to get money to feed their family.
“They are struggling to pay rent, and to buy food and milk for their families and children. Going by the number of phone calls we are getting, most of the refugees have run out of food.
“We cannot imagine how we are going to survive if the MCO continues,” he said in a statement today.
Zafar said his group does not have the funds to help these refugees, and that it relies on donations to get food and supplies to those in need.
He urged those who wish to help the community to contact the group leader in each state.
