Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said those working in the essential services in Seberang Perai will be allowed on the Penang Bridge.
Those without a valid reason will be asked to take a detour to return to the island.
The police action comes as part of the travel restrictions announced under the Movement Control Order from March 18-31.
Soffian said a roadblock has been mounted just before the Penang bridge to stop every vehicle.
Motorists must be prepared to show proof of legitimate business to be carried out on the mainland. “We are basically not allowing those with no valid reason from crossing over simply for touristic reasons or to patronise eating places,” he said.
There are 34 Covid-19 cases on the island, with 16 other cases on the mainland, bringing the state’s total infections to 50 persons.
The state recorded its first death today, that of a 74-year-old local man from the Sri Petaling tabligh cluster. He was first admitted to the Penang Hospital on March 13.
There are 10 deaths from the coronavirus disease recorded so far, while the infected numbers stood at 1,306, which includes 123 new cases recorded today.
A total of 139 patients have been discharged to date.
