KOTA KINABALU:
The suspect in Wednesday’s shooting incident at Pulau Gaya near here knew one of the victims, police said.

City police chief Habibi Majinji said police believed the suspect, who he identified as Kacang@Munding, had a personal feud with the 36-year-old victim while the two boys, aged 10 and three, who were wounded were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

He said the suspect, in his 30s, had confronted the victim who was standing on a wooden bridge with the boys, shortly before firing five to six shots in their direction at about 7.30pm.

“The shooter had warned the victim ‘jika kau berani, keluar (come out if you dare)’ before firing at them from a distance of about 10m to 15m,” he told reporters after an event at SK Sri Gaya here today.

Meanwhile, police have released a photo of the suspect and asked the public to inform them if they have any information of the man.

Habibi believed the suspect is still on the island.

“Efforts are underway to track him down and arrest him.

“The city Criminal Investigation Department and the state’s D9 (special investigation unit) are looking for the suspect with the help of the marine police,” he said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Previously, police said the suspect was believed to have a long-barrel firearm.
