Drunk driver ploughs into motorbike outside nasi kandar shop

The driver was apparently unaware as his car dragged the motorbike for about 1km around the streets of George Town in Penang.

GEORGE TOWN: A 53-year-old driver of a Proton Preve crashed into a parked motorcycle outside a nasi kandar shop in Jalan Gurdwara here and his vehicle dragged the machine for about a kilometre before he was stopped by concerned motorists.

In the incident which occurred around midnight, the car only came to a stop at a traffic light junction in Jalan Sungai Pinang after numerous attempts to attract the driver’s attention by other motorists.

A video recorded by a motorist showed that the driver appeared to be wary of the motorcyclists alongside his vehicle as they tried to get his attention by knocking on his windows.

Instead of stopping, he sped away, unaware of the motorbike still lodged under his front bumper.

Police said the motorcycle was a relatively new 155cc Yamaha NVX .

Northeast District police chief Soffian Santong said the case was being investigated for driving under the influence under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Under the section, drivers driving with an alcohol level concentration above the legal limit can be jailed for a maximum of one year or face a maximum of RM6,000 fine.

Soffian said the case was earlier classified as dangerous driving pending a blood alcohol test at the Penang Hospital. He said the case was later reclassified as driving under the influence of alcohol.

He said the man would be arrested soon.
